Ingredients of Homemade Cranberry Sauce

  1. Prepare 12 oz of (more or less) fresh or frozen cranberries.
  2. You need 1 cup of granulated sugar.
  3. Prepare 1 of Orange peel or lemon zest.
  4. You need of fresh ground black pepper.
  5. It's of salt.
  6. You need of water.

Instructions Tip the cranberries in a saucepan set over medium low heat. Fresh cranberries are cooked with orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice and brandy. This is a lovely cranberry sauce to serve with roasts, and to put on the sandwiches you make with the leftovers! In a small saucepan over low heat, combine sugar and water until sugar dissolves.

  1. Put aside half of the cranberries..
  2. Add the other half to a medium sauce pan along with the sugar, peel and 2-4 tablespoons of water depending on how thick you prefer it..
  3. Cook over a low, stir occasionally until the sugar has dissolved and the cranberries have become soft. Normally takes about 10 minutes or so..
  4. Turn the heat to medium and cook until the cranberries have burst, about another 10-12 minutes or so..
  5. Reduce heat to low again and stir in the reserved cranberries, cook until the reserved cranberries have become soft, about 5-7 minutes. Add 1-2 tablespoons of extra water if needed..
  6. Add more sugar to taste, and salt and pepper..
  7. Allow to cool to room temperature..
  8. Serve when ready..

Stir in orange zest and a pinch of salt. For a reduced-sugar cranberry sauce, use half the amount of sugar called for, then taste and add more as needed. To make sugar-free cranberry sauce, substitute a sugar replacer like Splenda or Truvia for the sugar. In a saucepan over medium-high heat, add the water, orange juice, and honey. Add in the cranberries and give everything stir.
